MONTICELLO, Ark. — The University of Arkansas at Monticello will host its fourth annual Bullying Awareness event on Tuesday, October 21, from 5:30 to 6:30 p.m. in observance of October as Bully Awareness Month.
The event will take place around Weevil Pond. Anyone wanting to learn how to prevent, recognize, and assist victims of bullying should attend. Experts on bullying will have booths set up around the pond and will be answering questions related to bullying. A memorial walk for victims of bullying will take place around the pond at sunset.
The event will be followed by a free Cyber-bully Awareness Training for parents Wednesday, October 22, from 6 to 7 p.m. at Wells Hall.
The free one-hour workshop is designed to help parents understand how to protect their children from cyber-bullies. “Bullies used to be found only on playgrounds,” explained Memorie Dickson, coordinator of community education at UAM. “Now they are on cell phones, Facebook, and other areas of the internet. Bullying has evolved and cyber bullying can lead to many problems, including suicide. This workshop helps parents understand how to recognize cyber bullying and offers ideas on how to respond.”
Registration for the workshop may be made online, by email, by calling (870) 460-1327, by fax at (870) 460-1324, or in person by stopping by the Community Education Office in the Administration Building. Registration forms and payments may also be mailed to: University of Arkansas at Monticello, Attn: Community Education – Office of Advancement , P. O. Box 3520, Monticello, AR 71656
