Operation Patriotic Bradley County will again be flying American Flags on the Bradley County Court Square.  This project was initiated by former resident Roxie Wright and honored our veterans and military men and women by flying flags on military holidays.

The Robert Abernethy Chapter of the Daughters of the American Revolution (DAR) has adopted this project and plans to fly the flags from the last week of August until mid November, including Veterans’ Day.  Plans for next year are being made to resume last year’s schedule of putting the flags up twice, to include Memorial Day and Veterans’ Day.

Flags may be purchased for $30 each in memory of or in honor of someone.  When the flags are taken down in November, they may be picked up or mailed to the person who purchased the flag.

Deadline to purchase a flag will be August 8, 2014.  To purchase a flag, pick up a form at one of the following locations:  Warren Branch Library, Bradley County Veterans’ Museum or Bradley County Chamber of Commerce.

A DAR spokesperson stated, “Our community is indebted to Mrs. Wright for recognizing those patriots who have served and are now serving our country.  We are pleased to adopt Operation Patriotic Bradley County as one of our service projects. ”

Warren, AR, May 30, 2014: Becky Howard of Warren, AR was diagnosed with chronic lymphocytic leukemia (CLL) in 2006. She underwent years of chemo and was eventually told her only option for survival was a bone marrow transplant. No family members were suitable matches for Becky, so she had to turn to the National Bone Marrow Registry. After months of searching, Becky recently found a potential bone marrow match and will soon begin the transplant process to give her a second chance at life.
Becky is grateful for her potential match, but knows that many other blood cancer patients are not so fortunate. Nearly 14,000 other patients are currently searching for bone marrow transplants, but more than half will never receive one. Becky, along with the help of her friends and family, wants to help other patients beat those odds by hosting a bone marrow donor drive.

On June 28, from 9am to 4pm, a drive will be held at Calvary Baptist Church in Warren, AR. Attendees ages 18-55 will have the opportunity to register as potential bone marrow donors. The registration process is simple and takes only a few minutes, involving filling out a form and swabbing the inside of the cheek. Becky wants to encourage her community to come together and help find matches for all the patients in desperate need of a life saving match.  “You could hold the DNA that could save someone’s life! And it is so simple to become a donor,” said Becky. Individuals unable to attend the drive can visit DeleteBloodCancer.org to register online.

About Delete Blood Cancer

We have helped register more than 4 million potential donors and facilitated more than 40,000 life-saving transplants around the world. But we’re not stopping there. Every day we lead the fight against blood cancer by working with families, communities and organizations to recruit more donors and provide more patients with second chances at life.

In the Superintendent's report, Mrs. Johnson reported on the End of Year Celebration and then turned the comment session over to Jonalyn Reep who announced "Big News" from SEACBEC.  Mrs. Reep told the board that SEACBEC tests seniors every other year, and this year, the school earned the Tech Centers That Work Platinum Award which is the highest award presented for achievement of the SEACBEC students scores in Math, Literacy, and Science.

Hermitage Provides Raises For Some Classified Employees

Superintendent Richard Rankin informed the Hermitage School Board that the minimum wage for classified employees has been raised by the State and several Hermitage employees would have to have their wages increased to comply.  The new minimum rate is $8.26 per hour.  After a good deal of discussion the board voted to provide raises to bring the district into compliance and to provide much needed increases to a larger number of classified employees. The total impact on the districts finances will be around $11,300 per year.  The money will come out of more than one fund and  should have little impact on the operating budget.

Mr. Rankin injformed the board that it looks like the district will finish the current year with a decent balance and should be about $75,000 above last year.  He cautioned the members to diligently monitor the budget to keep the district in good shape and to keep from borrowing funds as has been required in the past.

The board voted to authorize Dr. Tucker, the incoming superintendent, to begin signing checks July 1, 2014 and to remove Mr. Rankin from the signatory cards after June 30th.  Several board members were also authorized to sign if needed.

There was considerable discussion of the need to increase the extra money paid to coaches for the hours they work beyond the normal school day.  Of special concern were the baseball, softball, soccer and spring sports coaches.  The members decided to give the matter more consideration before taking a vote.

In final action the board voted to hire Jordan Hamett as baseball coach and math teacher.

The next meeting will be Tuesday June 17th to conduct a hearing and possibly other business.  The meeting will begin at 7:00 P.M.
