The Warren School Board met Monday, September 8, for its regular monthly meeting.  The meeting began with a public comment from a parent who was concerned about the bus pickup location for his children.  After hearing his remarks, the board and Superintendent Johnson explained why what he was seeking, the pick up of his children directly in front of his house, was not in the best safety interest for a bus pickup.  Mrs. Johnson indicated that she and the bus foreman would  be happy to discuss the matter for better resolution.

A disclosure resolution, which is required by law anytime a school employee has a business interest with which the school might contract, was approved.  Jamie Corker disclosed that she has part ownership in Corker Electric which is working for the school.

A special called school board meeting date of September 25 at 6:00 p.m. was set for the purpose of approving the budget and ACSIP.

Following the financial report given by Mrs. Debbi Hargrave, Mrs. Johnson informed the board that enrollment is up 36 students this year over the same time last year.  She noted that there are 140 pre-k students enrolled in the ABC program with 120 ABC funded and 20 NSLA funded.

Superintendent Johnson also informed the board that two schools were chosen to present "best practices" to the education committee at the Capitol.  Brunson New Vision Charter School was one of the two schools chosen to present.  Brunson Principal Regina Scroggins and Mrs. Jade Williams, counselor, made the presentation to the committee Monday.

The annual report to the public will be given at the October meeting.

Status reports on the renovations at the high school and on the repairs to the Tech center were given by Mrs. Johnson.  It was noted that the contractor, David Simmons, had been contacted by Mr. Odom regarding the need to complete the high school work as soon as possible due to fire code violations from last week's inspection.  The tech center report showed no asbestos but did indicate concern from bat guano above the 2nd ceiling.  The school is currently waiting on a report from emission control company in regards to the next steps.

Left to Right:  Alderman Jimmy Moseley, former Mayor Gregg Reep, Alderman Joel Tolefree, Alderman Dorothy Henderson, Beverly Johnson, Acie Johnson, Stephanie Stewart, Todd Stewart, Alderman Zack Burks, Alderman Marty Reep, Mayor Bryan Martin, and former Mayor John Frazer.
The regular monthly meeting of the Warren City Council Monday night began as anything but regular.  It is not often that someone steps forward and hands a town the keys to an industrial facility, FREE of any charge.  Acie Johnson and his family are the exceptions.  Mr. Johnson stood before the councilmen and told how he and his wife, Beverly, had given the building which once housed their custom saddle industry Ortho Flex, to their two daughters Stephanie and Jennifer some time back.  He recalled how his daughters had always been givers and that it was his great pleasure to see them want to give a gift of this building to the City of Warren.  Mr. Johnson shared his economic philosophy on giving to a community and watching it grow.  He noted that his family was making this donation in honor of three Warren Mayors: John Frazer, Gregg Reep, and Bryan Martin.  Mr. Johnson issued a challenge to all who own a vacant building to consider donating it rent free to a new business willing to locate in Warren for five years to give that business the economic boost to insure a successful start up.  Mr. Johnson's son-in-law, Todd Stewart, also spoke on behalf of his wife and the family, indicating that the family was proud to do this because they knew it was what Acie wanted.  Mr. Johnson told the council and the crowd attending the meeting, "Think small.  Grow big," as he encouraged investment in small businesses.  At the conclusion of the presentation of the keys to Mayor Martin, all the aldermen shared their gratitude.  Mrs. Dorothy Henderson was moved to say, "My heart is just touched." Other aldermen indicated that this would be a great tool to entice businesses to come to Warren.  Former Mayors Frazer and Reep were in attendance for the presentation.

In other business, the council was addressed by the President of the Chamber of Commerce David King who shared with them that the City of Warren has been named by Safe Choice Security one of the top ten safest places to live in Arkansas. Using crime statistics from the FBI and other sources, Safe Choice ranked Warren #10 in the state.  Mr. King pointed out that Warren was the only city in South Arkansas to make this distinguished list.

The aldermen received reports from BCEDC, Fire Department, Sanitation and Building Official.  Alderman Zach Burks showed a short presentation to the other councilmen showing the condition of some personally owned property in the city which he stressed needs cleanup.

A called city council meeting will be held September 22 at 5:30 p.m. in regards to the Water and Sewer bond issue public hearing concerning the paying off of bond issue dealing with the water and sewer around the bypass.  It was pointed out that this issue will NOT INCREASE water and sewer rates.

Arkansas Log A Load For Kids Celebrates 21 Years and $7 Million Raised for Arkansas Children’s Hospital.

In 1993, a group of Arkansas loggers and forest product industry representatives came together to start the Log A Load For Kids program to benefit Arkansas Children’s Hospital (ACH). That year, the campaign raised $42,000. In 2013, the group raised a record $500,000. To date, the program has raised $7 million for ACH.

Arkansas Log A Load For Kids has funded two $1.5 million endowments at ACH—one in pediatric cardiovascular surgery and another in support of the Angel One helicopter transport program—and one $1 million endowment in support of the hospital’s imaging and radiation program.
The program pledged to contribute all funds raised from 2008 to 2013 ($2 million) to help create a new Trauma Unit, a state-of-the art facility that will treat the state’s most seriously injured children as part of the new South Wing. In late 2011, ACH asked Log A Load to extend this commitment and add an additional $2 million from 2013-2017 fund raising efforts, designated as follows: $1 million to Emergency Services and $1 million to the Trauma Program. To honor this pledge, ACH named the new Emergency Department for Log A Load For Kids of Arkansas.
Arkansas is one of 27 states involved in Log A Load For Kids, which is celebrating its 25th anniversary nationally. The program started in South Carolina in 1988 when two loggers donated the value of a load of logs to their local children’s hospital. Log A Load For Kids is a national sponsor of Children’s Miracle Network (CMN), a nonprofit fundraising organization. ACH is a member of CMN.

The Arkansas Forestry Association (AFA) and Arkansas Timber Producers Association sponsor Log A Load For Kids in the state. For more information, look online at www.arkforests.org or www.facebook.com/arlogaload, or call the AFA office at (501) 374-2441.
