City Of Warren/Warren School District Team Up

The City of Warren and Warren School District have joined forces to secure grant funds to build a new high school soccer field on the site of Axley Field just north of the high school gym.  Axley Field was the longtime home of the Warren Lumberjack Football team prior to construction of Jim Hurley, Jr. Stadium.  It is still used for youth sports from time to time and is often used for practice by various youth teams associated with the Donald W. Reynolds YMCA.

Mayor Bryan Martin and Superintendent Marilyn Johnson recently traveled to Little Rock to make a presentation to the state in an effort to secure a $150,000.00 grant to assist with the construction of the soccer facility.  The total project is estimated to cost $300,000.00 and the grant will have to be matched dollar for dollar.

If the city and district can secure the grant then the two entities will have to match it with $150,000.00 which would be shared between the two.  The Lumberjacks have a thriving soccer program for boys and girls that competes well on the state level.  The field could also be used for local soccer leagues and the Donald W. Reynolds YMCA.

This grant effort is another case of working to provide additional recreational opportunities for the youth of Warren and the surrounding community.

It is time to get started.  The Warren Forward Downtown Network is ready to begin reconstruction of the Railroad Depot on Cedar Street to make it useable for economic development in Warren's downtown area.  With money contributed by the Armstrong Foundation, the Warren Lions Club and others the Network approved the go ahead to repair and replace the buildings windows.  The cost will run just over $5000.00.  There are also plans to have a work day to make other repairs and improvements to the facility on November 15th.

During the meeting the group talked about ways to raise additional funds to renovate the structure.  David King, Chamber President, informed the organization that the Santa Train will use the Depot December 15th for the annual Christmas event.

The Depot was donated to the Bradley County Chamber of Commerce by Arkansas Midland Railroad and plans are to make the historic building an asset for Warren.  The estimated cost of totally renovating the structure is over $115,000.00.  Any individual or organization wishing to help should contact Bradley County Chamber President David King.
