The Bradley County Medical Center Board of Directors met on Thursday, June 25. The meeting was called to order at 12:30 p.m. The Department Head presenter for this month was Clayton Winters from the Purchasing Department. Winters told the board that his department has two full-time employees and one part-time employee. He told the board that BCMC is a part of the Health Trust Buying Group. Other hospitals in our area are also part of this group including Chicot Memorial Medical Center in Lake Village, Ouachita County Medical Center in Camden, Medical Center of South Arkansas in El Dorado, Drew Memorial in Monticello, and Delta Memorial Hospital in Dumas. The minutes from the previous meeting were approved. Brandon Gorman gave the Financial Reports to the board. Dr. Joe Warton made medical staff recommendations. Rex Jones gave the executive update. He spoke about the implications of the Supreme Court’s ruling on King v. Burwell. Jones told the board that he is working with some agencies to find a temporary physician to cover OB while Dr. Worley is on medical leave. Jones told the board about the Hospital Operations meeting that he attended with Representative Jeff Wardlaw. Jones also told the board about the new guidelines for the measurement of radiation given to patients during CT examinations. Because BCMC’s current CT is not capable of that level of monitoring, they are evaluating the impact that this will make and if it makes sense financially to purchase the upgrade. Jones gave the board an update on the building project and the new portable X-Ray Unit. Brandon Gorman gave the board information on the Property Insurance Renewal for the hospital. The board then went into executive session to discuss personnel changes. The next meeting will be July 23, 2015.

Often times it seems emergency calls come in bunches, and on June 26th the Warren Fire Department responded to two separate calls just hours apart.  In both cases no one was hurt and there was no serious damage.

At 7:17 P.M. the department was dispatched to 1100 South Martin Street to a mobile home park.  The call was to lot #26 and while it reported as a fire, it turned out to be a natural gas leak.  Eleven firemen and one city fire engine answered the call.  They secured the area and called Centerpoint Entergy who responded and made repairs.

Later that night at 11:47 P.M. the department was called to the Armstrong Plant located in the Industrial Park due to a sawdust bin fire.  The Warren Fire Department had 12 firemen and three fire engines on site.  Bradley County Rural assisted with five fireman and one engine.  In addition the ambulance service responded in case of any accident and the Warren Street Department sent equipment to help move materials within the bin.  There was no serious damage and the mill continued to operate.

Fire Chief Howard Edwards informed SRC that five Warren Firemen attended the recent State Fire Convention held June 25-28 in Hot Springs.  They received training and education relating to fire fighting techniques and fire prevention.  The Warren City Council approved the firemen's attendance at the convention.

The Warren Forward Downtown Network met Thursday, June 25 at Golden Girls.

The group heard a report about the progress on renovation plans and fundraising for the W&OV Depot.  They also heard about the assessment to be conducted on the Bryant's Building concerning asbestos.  The discussed possible gofundme.com accounts to help raise revenue.  Donna Lawhon reported that they are looking at possible grants to assist in the efforts.  David King told the group that the cash that has been received and committed are being held for possible matching grants.

It was reported that a meeting is scheduled with building owners in the area of town designated at the Downtown Historic District.  Ralph Wilcox will be in attendance to discuss benefits to the property owners, especially tax cuts.  The majority in the district will have to agree in order to make this district official.  Mr. King told the group that EAST student Samantha Satterlee had been a "real go getter" in gathering the names of all the business owners in the area.

The group was informed that $1000 has been awarded to them for the purpose of issuing Main Street mini grants.  The committee decided to allow businesses to apply for funds in any amount up to $1000.  They will then determine if they will give one grant of $1000 or several smaller grants.  They further determined that the focus of the grants should be for building facades including signage. These grants will be matching one to one grants.

It was noted that the Downtown Conference for Arkansas, Louisiana, and Mississippi will be held September 14-16 in Little Rock.  Members were encouraged to attend.

Mr. King introduced Vicky McDougald to the group and informed them that she is joining Warren Forward parttime at the Chamber to assist in fundraising and grant writing.
