Each year for the past several years, Midland Railroad has helped Old St. Nick out by taking him through the region making stops along the way to visit with the little girls and boys.  Santa and Mrs. Claus, along with Frosty, Rudolph, and some of the elves pulled into town just past 9:30 a.m. Saturday morning.  The Santa Train stopped at the Main Street Crossing, and Santa and his friends moved inside the Donald W. Reynolds YMCA to get out of the frigid air.  Santa visited with each of the youngsters before hopping back on the train and moving on down the line.

The Hermitage School Board was informed during their monthly meeting December16th that the District is officially off the list of schools deemed in fiscal distress.  Superintendent Richard Rankin told the members the school district was officially removed from the designation by the State Board earlier in the day.  Originally the Hermitage District was put in fiscal distress due to serious financial difficulties.  Over the past months the superintendent and the board have make numerous hard decisions to help put the District's finances in order.  This has included reducing staff and cutting other expenses.  Mr. Rankin indicated management would continue to have to be watchful over money but the district is stable.

The board accepted the resignation of Helen Callum, the High School secretary, for purpose of retirement effective at the end of the current semester.

Mr. Rankin informed the board that Hermitage students continue to rank high in southeast Arkansas in the areas of algebra and geometry.  He believes the credit goes to teachers, students and parents.

The board agreed to begin a search for a new superintendent due to Mr. Rankin's plans to retire at the end of the school year in 2014.  A search firm will be hired to assist.

The Bradley County Quorum Court meet Monday December 16th for the regular Court Meeting.
Eight of the nine Justices were present with JP Jim Anders absent.  The members reviewed reports as normal.

A bonus of $300.00 was approved for all fulltime County employees and for three part time sheriff deputies.  The bonus was not made available for any elected official.  According to information provided the Justices, the cost to the county will be $14,209.80.  The cost to the general fund will be just over $6000.00.

There was considerable discussion about the idea of combining county offices. A committee that was appointed at the last meeting reported they have not meet but have been conducting individual research.  Justice Bobby Hargraves informed the members he has talked to a number of elected officals in other counties and there is much to consider and think about.  He stated every county is somewhat different.  Justice Gwen Bullard said any change must be tailor fit for Bradley county. Justice Pat Morman  said the process will be difficult.  No action ways taken.

Judge Neely reported plans are underway for a new bridge on Rd 134 and the contract has been let to Southern State Construction out of Johnsville.

Several actions were then approved by the Court:

ordinance #688 was approved appropriating Game & Fish  funds paid to the county
ordinance #689 was approved appropriating funds to upgrade the 911 system. This includes borrowing $50,410.73 to cover the cost of the county system.  The funds will be borrowed from First State Bank of Warren.

Ordinance #690 was approved adopting the county budget for 2014, excluding the general fund. No raises were approved.

Resolution  # 231 was approved authorizing a "continuing operation" of the county general budget for 2014 until further action is taken by the Quorum Court.  This means the county enters the year 2014 with the general fund budget set as it was for 2013.  There are no changes and no salary increases.

Desha County corn and soybean farmer earns 2013 honor
LITTLE ROCK — The Gill family of McGehee (Desha County) is the 2013 Arkansas Farm Family of the Year, announced today at the annual Farm Family Day luncheon honoring the county and district Farm Families of the Year.
Andy and Shannon Gill, along with their son Andrew and daughter Madeline, have a 3,200-acre corn and soybean operation.
After growing cotton for 30 years, in 2012 Andy sold his cotton picker and made the decision to concentrate strictly on corn and soybeans. He has built a new on-farm storage facility to handle their growing corn production. Both Andrew and Madeline are graduates of the University of Arkansas at Fayetteville. Andrew obtained an ag business degree and has returned home to help his father on the farm.

Andy grew up working on the farm for his father and uncle Doyle Sims, who helped him rent 265 cotton acres to get started on his own. Over time he added acres and equipment to his operation. He has improved the efficiency of his farm by placing drop pipes for drainage and installing three tailwater recovery systems to capture and utilize surface water for irrigation. Where he can Andy has converted his power units to electricity and participates in USDA Conservation Reserve Programs.
“The Gills are an example of the many successful and efficient family farming operations that exist in Arkansas,” said Andy Guffey, coordinator of the Arkansas Farm Family of the Year program. “They understand what it means to protect the environment and the natural resources used in growing their crops. This father-son team is a prime model of a hard-working, successful farm family.”
Andy is president of the McGehee Men’s Club and has been a member of the organization for 20 years. As president, he has overseen the remodel of a facility which serves as a community center in McGehee. He also coordinates the annual Oyster dinner, with the proceeds going to fund community activities. Shannon is a board member of the McGehee Community Food Pantry, while Andrew is a member of the Arkansas Young and Beginning Farmers Advisory board. The family is active with the First United Methodist Church.

As Arkansas’ Farm Family of the Year, the Gills will compete in the 2014 Swisher Sweets/Sunbelt Expo Southeastern Farmer of the Year program. A winner will be named from among 10 southeastern state winners in October in Moultrie, Ga.
“The Arkansas Farm Family of the Year program is the longest-running farm family recognition program of its type in the United States,” said Arkansas Farm Bureau President Randy Veach, a cotton, soybean and wheat farmer from Manila (Mississippi County). “We congratulate each of the county and district winners for this well-deserved recognition.”
The Farm Family of the Year program, now in its 68th year, begins with selection of the top farm family in each county. Then, eight district Farm Families of the Year are selected. The competition is judged on production, efficiency and management of farm operations, family life and rural/community leadership and values.
In addition to the Gills, the 2013 District Farm Family of the Year winners include:
 The Aday family of Leslie (Van Buren County), North Central District;
 Jeff and Tanya Hill of Moro (Lee County), East Central District;
 Mario and Lucina Maya of DeQueen (Sevier County), West Central District;
 Bob and Sarah Gorden of Mena (Polk County), Western District;
 Larry and Leslie Griffin of Ozan (Hempstead County), Southwest District;
 Lynn and Tammy Williams of Huntington (Sebastian County) Northwest District;
 Nick and Deanne Yount of Pollard (Clay County), Northeast District;
Arkansas Farm Bureau, the Arkansas Press Association, the Electric Cooperatives of Arkansas, AgHeritage FCS, Farm Credit of Western Arkansas, and Farm Credit Midsouth are sponsors of the annual recognition program. Additional program support is provided by the Arkansas Department of Career Education; the University of Arkansas Division of Agriculture; and USDA’s Farm Service Agency, Natural Resources Conservation Service, and Rural Development.
Arkansas Farm Bureau is a nonprofit, private advocacy organization of more than 192,000 families throughout the state working to improve farm and rural life.

UAM To Offer Online RN-To-BSN Program Beginning In May 2014

           MONTICELLO, AR — The School of Nursing at the University of Arkansas at Monticello will begin offering a separate online program in May 2014 for registered nurses who wish to pursue a bachelor of science in nursing degree.
            The new RN-to-BSNprogram is a hybrid with 90 percent completed online and 10 percent on campus. It will take one calendar year to complete and is designed to work around the schedule of practicing nurses. “Our traditional RN-to-BSN degree program was not conducive to their work schedules,” said Dr. Laura Evans, dean of the School of Nursing. “They have jobs and families and can’t come to campus every day.”
            The new program will allow practicing RN’s to maintain their work schedule while submitting assignments online using Blackboard, Evans explained. The program is nearly identical to the traditional on-campus program in terms of academic hours required but with reduced clinical hours. “These are practicing nurses who are already getting plenty of clinical experience,” said Evans.

            The first class will be admitted during the May 2014 intersession and will graduate in May 2015. Students seeking admission to the program must complete all prerequisite hours before being admitted. Not all prerequisites are offeredonline. “In the old program, students had the option of going one or two years, depending on their academic course load,” said Evans. “The new program has been streamlined to be finished in one year.”
            Previously, RN-to-BSN students might take two courses in the fall, each with a 90-hour practicum, Evans noted. “Now they can take the two courses, each taking eight weeks, with one practicum for both courses.”
            The addition of an online RN-to-BSN program is part of a nationwide effort by nursing schools to meet the goal set by nursing organizations such as the International Council of Nursing and the American Nurses Association that all registered nurses should have the bachelor of science in nursing degree. “Having a BSN means better pay,” said Evans, “and it improves the quality of nursing care.”
            “This is one more example of UAM’s commitment to serve the people of southeast Arkansas and beyond,” said Dr. Jimmie Yeiser, provost and vice chancellor for academic affairs.  “I commend the nursing faculty for rising to the challenge of developing this hybrid nursing program and meeting this societal need.”
            Evans said reaction to the online program from area nurses has been positive. “We’re getting an enthusiastic response,” she said. “If all the nurses who say they want to take the program enroll, we’ll have to hire more faculty.”
            For more information, contact the School of Nursing at (870) 460-1069.
